Welcome to GemKa

Today I launch GemKa. It's a day that's been nine years in the making because that's how long the ideas behind these products have been bouncing around the back of my head. I've been thinking about this day a lot in the last six months, working full time on GemKa.

GemKa's tagline is "It starts with me." Even more than that, it's a promise. I've used GemTimer, GemTodo and IdeaKache every day for months and so I really care about getting them right.

Let's start with GemTimer, my first product. I use GemTimer to own where my time goes, focusing on what projects I work on and how much deep work I do. Enter a project name, decide whether this is Deep Work (i.e., demanding or focused work) or Sustaining (i.e., lighter work that keeps things moving).

Press start and get to work. You can use pause, edit sessions or even add sessions if you were away from a device. When you want to do a deep dive into how you spend your time, there's a whole section with breakdowns waiting for you.

GemTodo is my second product. GemTodo productizes the approach to to-do lists that I've iterated on for nine years. To get started, enter a todo, assign the todo to a project you name and then decide whether it goes into the Action or Someday categories.

Action is for the things you need to get done and Someday is for things you might get to one day and don't want to forget. There's a third category called Reference, which is for information to keep handy or to track something you're waiting on from someone else. As with GemTimer, there's a deep dive section with breakdowns waiting for you.

I use GemTimer and GemTodo together as a set and one look at my iPad would show you how. They are the two browser tabs I have open, and often the only two. I toggle between them as I work, comparing my self-identified priorities against what I'm actually working on. After several months of doing this, I'm the most productive I've ever been.

IdeaKache is my third product. It's my personal collection of ideas worth holding onto. I started the collection nine years ago and until recently it was spread across various Dropbox folders. The collection comes from books, podcasts, X and corners of the internet. Every one of the 2,410 entries has taught me something, and I take lessons from it every day. I can't tell you how many times I've called on different lessons from James Dyson in the last few months.

Getting started is easy. All three products are free. GemTimer, GemTodo and IdeaKache share a single login too. That means you only need to create an account once through GemKa and it works across all of them.

Here we go.
